Dick Tracy

I've been busy working on new "Insufferable" episodes and three new projects but also doing random pieces like this great Dick Tracy illustration! Brent Schoonover did the line art and I colored it.

"The Thing"

Last quarter, fellow professor and amazing cartoonist Chris Schweizer drew this poster for the classic horror flick "John Carpenter's 'The Thing'" in one of his classes. Five milliseconds after I saw it, even uncompleted, I knew I wanted to color it! Lucky for me he finished it and sent the high res to me to do just that. Played around with my new Art Pen on my Cintiq and a new process which I'm really loving on this. My main focus was to make sure it read from a distance and let the amazing detail Chris put into it be a reward for looking closer. (There's some ghoulish stuff happening so look really close!) Pretty damn happy with how it turned out and so happy Chris shared it with me!

Fake Cover for "Irredeemable"

One of the classes I'm teaching this quarter is a graduate level course on digital design and processes for comics. Their first job was to create a cover for a comic or comic anthology whether an original book or otherwise. It's primarily so I can gauge each student's skill level and start them out learning how to use Photoshop. I found myself with time in class while students worked and didn't need my guidance so created this fake cover for "Irredeemable", one of the titles I color monthly. This took about six hours all together. It's been far too long since I've drawn rather than just colored so this was primarily an exercise in brushing off a thick layer of rust. Overall, pretty happy with it even if it's not the most original of concepts.

Plunkett's Hamlet Vader

Decided when I can't sleep and melatonin isn't working I'll do fun stuff; i.e. it looks like 'work' to some but doesn't pay the bills yet invests in the soul. There's a folder on my desktop chock-full of black and white sketches I collect from the internet perfect for some quick coloring fun. So I give you Killian Plunkett's unused cover for Dark Horse's "Star Wars Tales" #6 colored by moi. I hope to do this kinda stuff and originals more often.

Sith color

Monsters like Sith shouldn't ever be completely attractive. The longer I worked on this one (only about 3-4 hours) the less I liked it as a pin-up. I think I stayed a little too true to the subject (so for that I really like it) and didn't pull it back to the series enough. That's ok. Just means I get to work on another Sith at some point.

Jedi Twi'Lek Color

Upon waking, the arm on the Twi'lek I had drawn really wasn't working for me so she got a new one. I went a little variation happy on the color too. This is only half of them. Now I'm seeing what works and what doesn't for this series so don't feel this is as successful as the TD. Still, it was fun enough.



Mandalorian, Clonetroopers, Sith, Nobility, Rebel Soldier, Imperial Officer, KOTOR, Biker Scout, Space Pirate, Stormtrooper, X-Wing Pilot, and more are on my list of to-dos for this. Can you think of more?

The Series Continues

I've been needing some completely brainless, fun work to de-stress a bit so these Star Wars pin-ups (cuz what could be more brainless and fun?) were just what I needed. I'm not going for overtly sexual. It's just shy of classic too. I just want them to be fun and so far it's working. This Jedi Twi'lek will have multiple colored versions to play around with all the differing shades of skin they can have. Stay tuned for that.

PS - I am now inspired to do some brainless work on a series of Star Wars related pin-ups. Probably sell prints of them and much more at HEROES and see how that goes.

Happy Star Wars Day! It's my favorite day of the year for many reasons and this is just one of them. I decided to make a fun Star Wars pin-up for it. I'll have it colored in the next day or two as time allows. This is one Sandtrooper those Rebels only wish they could hit! HA!

Batgirl Inks

This is the latest sketch challenge on the Temple so I'm trying to keep up like I wanted each week. As with Batman, I want her gear and outfit to be a little more plausible than what's normally in the comics but not so armor oriented as what's in the movie. I think it's completely lame comics "hide" armor on a guy's chest simply by saying as much but a woman is always drawn as if her breasts are simply painted and out for the world to ogle over (which has it's place but not here) so, yes, I gave her a bullet-proof vest with some subtle feminine curve. The gear ended up making her hands with the built in brass knuckles look large but I kinda like the proportions it gave her overall with the helmet. Initially, I had this image of Barbara Gordon crushing a little plastic toy of a joker head (a la Carl's Jr.) under boot but it wasn't working for me. The idea for burning the over-sized Joker card in Batman's cave with Barbara walking through it as Batgirl took off from there. I rather like the different bat-symbol on her vest. Tomorrow I'll color it!
